…from Nizza Monferrato discovering the most ancient Palio Race in Italy

20th of September – Saturday. In the morning arrival in the sweet Monferrato Hills where castles and historical towns peep out among Barbera grapes lines and hazelnut trees. Entrance in the famous Berta distillery, placed in Mombaruzzo, in the province of Asti; from a suggestive panoramic position, the building dominates High Monferrato Hills around. By four generations the factory produces many high-grade typologies of grappa, combining tradition and innovation. Later You’ll visit the pastry workshop where the “soft amaretti”, the typical baked products born in Mombaruzzo, are produced. Final taste made of grappa paired with amaretti. Transfer to Nizza Monferrato for having lunch at restaurant made of typical dishes, combined with the best local wines, as Barbera d’Asti docg. In the afternoon you’ll visit “Bersano Museum of Rural Crafts” in Nizza Monferrato. Bersano is a historical local winery and the Museum recollects many work tools and domestic objects that characterized the Piedmontese rural society in the past; some of them date back to the Sixteenth century. As alternative entrance in “Musem of Taste”, placed within Crova Palace, a noble Eighteenth-century residence, which shows originally local products and the most important Piedmontese recipes, from the valued Truffle to Bagna Cauda souce. Finally free time for a walk in the old town centre of Nizza Monferrato, among medieval covered walks, small shops and elegant coffee-bars; you can’t miss the churches of Saint Giovanni in Lanero and Saint Siro, both rich in works of art, the Town Hall and the Civic Tower.
In the evening you’ll get down breathing the atmosphere of Palio, with songs, good luck practices and yellow and red colored foulards. You’ll take part in the traditional propitiatory dinner; in this occasion the jockey is usually presented to the citizens officially, their proud and hope. Collective fear, tension and elation mixed themselves among the lively tables up late at night, waiting for the contest. In 2014 edition, the jockey Giovanni Atzeni, so-called “Tittia”, will represent the town of Nizza Monferrato in the race, who already won Palio Races of Asti, Legnano and the famous Palio Race of Siena. Overnight-stay and breakfast in one of the local accommodation facilities.
21st of September – Sunday. In the morning free time for looking around among lively Street Market of Antiques in Nizza Monferrato and attending the historical parade, where the figures wear the colors of the city, among brocades, jewels and armors. Finally there will be the waited horse and jockey blessing, both ready to reach Asti and take part in the race. Lunch at restaurant in Nizza Monferrato, tasting typical dishes and wines. In the afternoon You’ll move to Asti in order to be present at Palio Race which is the most ancient Palio Race in Italy, documented since 1275. At 14,00 the beautiful historical parade in medieval dresses will begin, moving across the old town centre, where hundreds of figures will represent the 21 contenders, wearing colors of their districts and villages, among knights, ladies, monks and fortune-tellers. The parade will start at 14,00 from Cattedrale Square, and will finish in Alfieri Square, where the Race takes place at 16,00 around.
It’s possible to attend Race from box seats (by tickets reservation and purchase only) or standing from parterre (free entrance).
