First day. Arrival at the hills of Monferrato in early afternoon. Starting point of walk will be the residential area of Cantarana, next to seat of Pro Loco association. This itinerary will lead You to discover one of the most interesting areas of TriversaValley, by the element which characterizes it mainly: the water. The name of village, which means “the frog sings” has a Celtic origin and proves the presence of many flows since the remote times. Water influenced all along the usual life, the agricultural work and culture of inhabitants of this area, both in positive and negative ways. From the seat of Pro Loco, You can start in North-West direction, following the indication to Val Marrone, crossing the hills of Bricco Grosso and Villafranca, up to reach the crossroads with Bricco Grosso road, which offers a beautiful panoramic view. You can go down towards the farmhouses of Bricco for reaching the small church of Saint Nazario. (From here it’s possible to choose a nice deviation for making a circular walk along a quiet level path; it crosses Rio Valmaggiore valley and leads to the fields of springs in Bonoma Locality. From there it’s possible to return to Cantarana easily taking the tiny street running along Cascine Campia and Via del Martinetto Locality. For who wants to continue the first itinerary, from the church of Saint Nazario You will reach in a short time the main road Strada Provinciale in direction of Villafranca – Ferrere, walking along it for 150 meters. Crossing Valmaggiore Stream You can reach the field of Bonoma Locality; the route develops around this area, where You can observe the different buildings built in the time for exploiting the water. On request, booking in advance, it will be possible to make an interesting visit to the aqueduct, a real excellence in this sector for functionality of system and quality of water supplied on a large area of territory of Asti. The walk continues upward in the direction of Serramezzana Locality, through suggestive woods preserving many kinds of autochthon species; You can’t miss the so-called Garden of Orchids”, a slight slope where grow some beautiful protected species of wild orchids. Finally You can go down in direction of Bricco dell’ Oca Locality running along some characteristic votive chapels and enjoying very suggestive panoramic glimpses, up to return to Cantarana. Accommodation in a selected hotel of this zone, typical Piedmontese dinner and overnight.

Second day. After breakfast You can start again in direction of Serralunga Locality, running along a small canal realized in the past for bringing water to an ancient mill. From Serralunga, after a short walk on the main road, You take again a secondary street in the direction of Bricco Barrano, meeting some interesting votive chapels and the small church of Saint Pancrazio. In Bricco Barrano the antique village and the church of Saint Donato will wait for You. Going on downhill on a very quiet tiny street, You will arrive to Serralunga, which was in the past a very important village as the seat of powerful Counts of Serralunga. From there You can continue to Arboschio Locality and finally, in a short time, to Cantarana. Traditional lunch at local farm holiday for tasting the best wines of this area, as Barbera d’Asti. In the afternoon, taking the road called Strada del Mulino, in an hour and half by walking You will reach the town of Ferrere, where there will be a stop at “Quadro Carni e Salumi” factory, for tasting and buying delicious local sausages and salami.

Alternative route for the second day. After breakfast, departure in direction of Pratomorone, a small locality reachable by a quiet walk of 2 hours among secondary tiny streets. You have to go toward Regione Bricco Morra and later cross Martinetta Locality; then You will take Strada Tigliole street, You will continue on Strada Remondini street, later on Strada Pocola street and in a second time on Strada Serra Nani street. Finally You will enter in Gherbino Locality, at the door of Pratomorone. Lunch time at “Da Mariuccia” restaurant, placed along Strada Pratomorone street with a Piedmontese typical dishes menu. In the afternoon, going on Strada Pratomorone, You will reach the village of Tigliole, placed one hour by walking from the restaurant. You can visit the parish of Saints Giovanni and Lorenzo, built in the Sixteenth century and modernized in the half of the Seventeenth century in Baroque style; inside it houses a nice painting by Guglielmo Caccia and a big wood crucifix, both of them dated to the Seventeenth century. The town is dominated by the noble structure of the Town Hall, built in the Nineteenth century on the remains of the ancient fortress. The structure, perfectly squared, has four regular facades, showing in this way the same aspect to each street coming to Tigliole. At one km far from the town there is the suggestive Romanesque church of Saint Lorenzo, founded between the Eleventh and the Twelfth centuries. Used by the first inhabitants of the village as parish church and cemetery, it preserves the original wall in the apse, with the typical two-colored structure. Taking the path visible on the left of the church, in 40 minutes around You can reach the LIPU Association for Fauna Centre (Lipu means Italian Association for Birds protection). The LIPU section of Asti was born in 1983 and cares about environmental education, scientific research and monitoring of local and migratory species of birds with competence and care all along. At the LIPU section of Tigliole You will able to visit, on request, the Recovering Centre for Wild Animals, where wounded birds of prey and wild animals are attended before being set at liberty.
