First day. Starting point: LOCALITA’ OTTINI (near to the town of Tonengo). Next stops-over: MAROERO VILLAGE (near to the town of Cocconato) – COCCONITO CROSSROAD (Cocconato) – TUFFO VILLAGE (Cocconato) – COCCONATO. Length of route: around 12 km. Duration by foot: around 3 hours and half.

Next stops-over: MAROEROVILLAGE (near to the town of Cocconato) – COCCONITO CROSSROAD (Cocconato) – TUFFOVILLAGE (Cocconato) – MONTIGLIO MONFERRATO. Length of route: around 15 km. Duration by foot: around 5 hours.

Second day. Starting point: COCCONATO. Next stops-over: ARAMENGO – VEZZOLANO (near to the town of Albugnano). Length of route: around 13 km       Duration by foot: around 3 hours and half.

Possibility to make the transfer from Cocconato to Aramengo and later up to Vezzolano by bus or by car.

First day. Arrival in the hills of Monferrato in the early afternoon. The walk starts from Ottini Locality, near to the town of Tonengo, for reaching in a short time the Romanesque church of Saint Michele which preserves interesting decorative elements. Going on along the top of the hill, surrounded by very suggestive panoramas, You will arrive to the crossroad near to Maroero Locality, around 50 meters from the town centre, where You can deviate in the direction of Cocconito-Vignaretto; here, going out the village, another crossroad will wait for You, where we suggest to continue on the left, in the direction of Strada delle Serre. This one crosses a wood area, also few inhabited, up to reach Tuffo Locality. However, after around 160 meters from the access to “Strada delle Serre”, You can try a short deviation toward East- Northeast along a tiny path; in this way after 400 meters, on the top of a wood hill You will reach the small Romanesque church of Saint Giovanni, also perfect for a cool break, surrounded by a fascinating landscape. Coming back to the main road, You can go on toward East along “Strada delle Serre”, walking on an easy path among woods, clearings and small vineyards. Depenfing on the season, You will able to enjoy the flowering of many interesting species, in particular wild orchids, all declared as protected species and precious “jewels” of this corner of low Monferrato. After You arrived in Tuffo locality, You will continue to Cocconato, which is one of the most representative villages in the Northern area of Asti province, from architectonical and gastronomic points of view. The village gives the name to a delicious Robiola cheese, a delicate product made of cow milk, and famous kinds of salami, both traditional and aromatized versions. The territory of Cocconato stands out also for the production of high quality wines, with the presence of very important wineries, where excellent varieties of Barbera d’Asti and Barbera del Monferrato are produced. Because of it, You can’t miss a tempting stop at Ferrero Sausage and Salami factory, placed in the entrance to the old town centre, for tasting and buying the best traditional salami.After accommodation at “Locanda Martelletti” hotel and restaurant, placed in the historical heart of Cocconato, Piedmontese traditional dishes dinner and overnight. As an alternative, traditional dinner and overnight at “Enoagriturismo L’Acino d’Uva”, winery and farm holiday, located a few steps from the residential zone of Cunico.

After You arrived in Tuffo locality, You will continue in the direction of Montiglio Monferrato, an ancient stronghold of Marquises of Monferrato, reachable in one hour and a quarter around. You have to take the main road Strada Provinciale 20 and cross Sant’Anna Locality; after, You can take the main road Strada Provinciale 22 and cross Pironda Locality; from there You can continue to Montiglio. The town still preserves a beautiful medieval castle, only in part modernized between the Seventeenth and the Eighteenth centuries, when also the garden in Italian style have been realized. You can’t miss the suggestive Romanesque church of Saint Lorenzo, founded between the Tenth and the Eleventh centuries, the vertex of the famous “Golden Triangle” of Romanesque in the province of Asti. It’s placed 1 km far from the village, in the direction of cemetery, and preserves inside precious sculpted capitals representing mysterious symbolic images. After You left the village, You start again in direction of Cunico, taking the main road Strada Provinciale 22. Stop for a traditional Piedomtese dinner and overnight at “Enoagriturismo L’Acino d’Uva”, winery and farm holiday, placed in Cunico.

Second day. After breakfast, we suggest a walk in the old town centre of Cocconato; You can visit the Seventeenth century confraternity of Saint Trinity, which houses a precious wood altar, the Town Hall, a perfect example of Piedmontese Gothic architecture, and finally the parish dedicated to the Virgin of Graces, rich in important works of art. Departure in direction of Aramengo, a small village placed on the borderline of the province of Asti, between Monferrato hills and the first slopes of province of Turin. The village, which offers very suggestive panoramic views, is reachable walking along the main road Strada Provinciale 20; from this one, You can take finally the main road Strada Provinciale Aramengo – Cisterna. After You arrived in the town, placed at 365 meters of altitude, You can visit the impressive parish of Saint Antonio Abate, which dominates from its vantage churchyard all the village around. Projected in Baroque style in 1769, it was finished only in 1804 and preserves inside a rich pictorial decoration, realized by the famous artists Giacomo and Enrico Canova in the second half part of the Nineteenth century. Over the main altar is visible a precious canvas dated to the second half part of the Seventeenth century showing “The Temptations of Saint Antonio Abate” attributed to the great Charles Dauphin. Lunchtime at “La Corte del Barbio” restaurant, where You will be surprised by the most tasty recipes of Monferrato. In the afternoon, possibility to enter the famous “Nicola Restauri” restoration studio, placed in Aramengo, where You will be able to discover the methods for renovation of frescos and sculptures guided by Nicola family, one of the most preferred partners of Superintendence, Museums and great collectors internationally. Later, departure in direction of Vezzolano, near to the village of Albugnano, for visiting the renowned Abbey of Saint Mary, a Piedmontese medieval architecture masterpiece. You can take Strada Masio and cross Masio locality. Going on in the direction of Cascina Quarino locality, You will take the main road and You will reach the Abbey. Built between the end of the Eleventh century and the Thirteenth century, it preserves a curious sculpted pulpit and a rich Gothic fresco decoration in the cloister. Departure to return.
