All the tours dedicated to students are perfectly adaptable to families; Welcome Piemonte wants to offer to them a series of valiant alternatives in order to spend a week end in the sign of nature, discovery and fun. These activities can involve parents and children of all ages and can be made on reservation all Saturdays and Sundays; the costs are very convenient and start from 69,00 euros for family. STUDY HOLIDAYS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

An unforgettable experience for all the international students who wish to improve the knowledge of Italian language discovering the beauties of Piedmont supported by professional tour guides and some experts in the field of education and planning. Students will be able to improve knowledge of language by itineraries and practical activities with regional literature, history, art and architecture as the protagonists, moving from the masterpieces of Romanesque to Risorgimento, from Cesare Pavese to Savoy Realms. NATURE TRAILS AND ACTIVITIES FOCUS ON PALEONTOLOGY

Description: the day starts with an introduction to the geological evolution of Monferrato territory up to the current morphological structure. Later visit to the small Museum in Valleandona, where important fossils of animals and plants dated to Pliocene period (from 5 to 2 million of years ago) are exhibited. The practical activity includes production of das casts, classification of fossils and present shells and fossils cleaning. In the afternoon there is a tour among the Special Natural Reserve of Valle Andona, Valle Botto and Val Grande, where students observe the fossils outcrops and make an amusing simulated excavation.

Intended for infant and primary schools.
Description: telling the story about the fossil dolphin found in the village of Bellangero, children will be able to discover the ancient Padano Sea which covered territory of Piedmont in the past. Adolfino will meet many friends in this sea, as Tersilla fin whale. During the day, behaviors, feeding and cohabitation modalities of some marine animals are explained to students that can discover how that beautiful tropical sea receded giving to us the lands where nowadays we live. In the afternoon there is a tour among the Special Natural Reserve of Valle Andona, Valle Botto and Val Grande, where students observe the fossils outcrops and make an amusing simulated excavation.

Description: in the morning visit to the Paleontological Museum of Asti, placed in Michelerio Complex, which shows many kinds of fossil finds dated to Pliocene Period (from 5 to 2 million of years ago); among them there are a rich collection of fossil shells, the famous “Tersilla” fin whale, lived three millions and half of years ago and the
“Viglianottera”, which is one of the most interesting finds in Europe from Tertiary Era. Later transfer to Valleandona for making a walk among the Special Natural Reserve of Valle Andona, Valle Botto and Val Grande, where it’s possible to observe the fossil outcrops which date back to Pliocene Period. Finally students can try an amusing simulated excavation, looking for fossils, and understand the real job of paleontologist.

Description: among lines of Monferrato Hills students discover the life cycle of vine and all the phases characterizing the job of farmer in vineyard, from planting to harvest; later in the wine cellar it’s possible to observe the complete wine making process step by step.
Seat and operating methods: this work takes place in the village of Vinchio (ASTI) and can be made in one full or half day, depending on the needs of participants, in every period of the year. However we suggest the harvest season, which students can attend in first person.

nocciole THE HAZELNUT LAND

Intended for infant and primary schools.
Description: a walk among the hills around the village of Castellero, “the city of Hazelnut”, for discovering secrets of this precious fruit. Along the path among hazelnut trees and small woods, the whole cycle of hazelnuts production will be illustrated, stopping at some farms where children can watch old and modern instruments and machineries used for hazelnuts processing. Finally entrance to a local bakery for tasting different products made up of hazelnuts. On request, there will be the possibility to prepare hazelnut cookies.

Description: by a tour among the beautiful Monferrato Hills, students can observe animals closely; discover farming methods and some typical products process. Thanks to this activity, students can get in contact with local fauna by fieldwork and not only by books. Particular attention will be given to local cheese chain of production.

passeggiandoPROJECTING “IN GREEN” FOR AN ECO-FRIENDLY FUTURE
Planning work in environmental field for eco-friendly tourism…

Intended for secondary and upper schools.

Description: the purpose of this work consists in the analysis of a Natural Reserve in order to create a project about the development of eco-friendly tourism. The Special Natural Reserve of Val Sarmassa will be used as a “case study”. By creation of real working groups, the local system of this territory with its net of old and current connections, its problems and critical situations will be examined; finally students will have to create some specific routes destined to the development of the eco-sustainability in the fields of tourism and didactic works. In the morning introduction of the Special Natural Reserve of Val Sarmassa and guided walk among the Reserve supported by a specific form for making a “guided observation”. Possibility to choose between two itineraries: the first one is about the literary route dedicated to the local writer Davide Laiolo, the second one is connected to naturalistic and paleontological themes. In the afternoon visit to the Winery of Vinchio and Vaglio Serra, the strong point of local economy and tradition. Later students will be divided again in the work groups for elaborating elements observed in the Reserve using specific research material. They will have to create a series of tourist packages, destined to different targets, playing the part of “local consultants” and “educational routes designers”.

amarettiFROM WINE TO GRAPPA

Intended for secondary and upper schools.
Description: a guided tour discovering some successful local enterprises. They are well-established in Monferrato territory and stand out since many decades thanks to the production of some local wine and food specialties, a very important branch in Piedmont from economic, social and cultural points of view. The tour starts from the village of Vinchio, which is world famous for the production of excellent kinds of Barbera wine; stopover at the Winery of Vinchio and Vaglio Serra which every year exports thousands of bottles all over the world. During the itinerary the productive process and the company structure will be illustrated. In the afternoon transfer to the village of Mombaruzzo, for visiting the renowned “Berta Distillery”, characterized by an innovative business system, where students can see the modern distillation machinery. Finally, they enter the confectionary workshop, where delicious “Amaretti morbidi” are produced; they are a typical specialty born in Monferrato and nowadays appreciated internationally. A really unique good union between spirits and baked-products, result of combination between tradition and innovation. Possibility to taste and buy all these products inside the factories.

mazzetti d'altavillaMAZZETTI D’ALTAVILLA DISTILLERY

Intended for secondary and upper schools.
Description: entrance to the renowned Mazzetti d’Altavilla Distillery, placed in the village of Altavilla Monferrato, a leader company in the field of grappa production. The tour takes two hours and includes guided visit to the rooms of factory with description of management methods and marketing techniques and their evolution during the time. Later
entrance to the dealer for watching the new packaging and launch methods studied for the different products, from the “jewel bottles” to the mignon ones.

Description: entering some famous local farms placed in the village of Castellero, recognized as the “City of Hazelnut” nationally, students can discover the various methods of growing and both antique and modern techniques of hazelnut production and processing. The tour includes “Cascina Arisio”, where student can observe how the hazelnut oil was produced in the past. The next stop is “Cascina Cunotto”, a very famous farm in this sector thanks to really innovative techniques of hazelnuts growing and harvest. The last stop is an important family-run business where students can observe the use of hazelnuts in traditional baked-products and pastries making. The tour shows also the life cycle of hazelnut tree from the young plant to the hazelnuts harvest and final processing.

LITERARY TOURS

Description: visit to the places where four great Piedmontese writers lived and located their works. During the tours students will discover their life, ideals, works and the deep bond with this territory.

Cesare Pavese6CESARE PAVESE

Standard tour. This itinerary takes place in the village of Santo Stefano Belbo, where the writer was born and wanted to place his last work, called “The Moon and Bonfires”. Tour starts from the Foundation dedicated to Cesare Pavese, the focal point for researchers and people keen about his works, where a small museum shows books and objects of the writer. Later entrance to Cesare Pavese’s Birth House which preserves photos, books, manuscripts, and the room where the writer was born. Finally a short stop at the Mora Farmhouse and visit to the House-Workshop of Nuto, where a suggestive Museum collecting original objects and tools makes live again the carpenter’s shop of Pinolo Scaglione, the best friend of Pavese and important character in his last romance.

Chronological tour
STOP-OVER N.1: CESARE PAVESE’S BIRTH HOUSE. Here students will be able to observe photos, books and manuscripts, and visit the room where the writer was born. Some pieces from “The trade of living” and “Working tires” will be read, deducing analogies and differences between the first edition (1936) and the second one (1942).
STOP-OVER N.2: GAMINELLA HILL. A walk discovering Gaminella Hill (it takes 40 minutes) where the themes of landscape and rural world will be discussed by pieces from “The moon and the bonfires”. Gaminella Hill represents the childhood of protagonist, with games, dreams and idols which characterize it: Anguilla dreams about going beyond the hills of Canelli, taking the train and travelling around the world. But Gaminella is also the hill of Partisan Resistance, where many guys lost their life during the war. Free time for lunch; on request lunch at recommended agritourism.
STOP-OVER N.3: RAILROAD STATION. Transfer to the railway station of Santo Stefano Belbo, the place of departure and arrival of many characters in the works written by Pavese. In this place the theme of contraposition between countryside and city will be discussed, by a piece from “Your villages”.
STOP-OVER N.4: HOUSE-WORKSHOP OF NUTO. Tour goes on with the houseworkshop of Nuto, the fraternal friend of Pavese and important figure in his last romance. Nuto symbolizes the worldly wisdom and the connection with the past which could never return. In these rooms transformed into a museum, some pieces from “The moon and the bonfires” will be read.
STOP-OVER N.5: CEMETERY. Stop-over at the tomb of the writer, which shows these words:” I given poetry to humanity”. In this place student will examine the theme of contraposition between the self-congratulation and the lacking existential maturation which causes the sense of defeat and bitterness in the writer.
STOP-OVER N.6: CESARE PAVESE FOUNDATION. Finally visit to the Foundation dedicated to Cesare Pavese, which preserves a small museum dedicated to the writer. Here the staff works in order to valorize and spread the writer’s works and his territory. As an alternative to one or more stops-over in the day it’s possible to reach Moncucco Hill, that Cesare Pavese preferred for his walks; on this hill, the silent protagonist of the famous poem “The seas of South”, the myth of America, the theme of travel and return find their voice, in the name of a bond with the roots that neither space nor time can blot out.

DAVIDE LAJOLO A 70 ANNIDAVIDE LAJOLO

Tour takes place among charming landscapes of High Monferrato Hills, in the small village of Vinchio, the focal point for tourists and lovers of Nature because of the presence of the Special Natural Reserve of Val Sarmassa and the rich gastronomic tradition, made up of truffles, asparaguses and excellent kinds of Barbera d’Asti wines. On these quiet hills the writer and politician Davide Laiolo was born and spent the most important moments of his adventurous life. He became famous especially because of its experience as partisan, with the name of Ulisse. The guided tour dedicated to him starts from the multimedia museum “Vinchio è il mio nido” (“Vinchio is my nest”) like so he called its native country. In the museum photos and words taken from his books tell his life as partisan and writer and his activity in political and journalistic fields. Tour goes on with some short stops trough the village (“the castle”, the Town Hall…) and the entrance to the Special Natural Reserve of Val Sarmassa for discovering by a quiet walk the places of this writer (as the Ru tree, the Cabin of Ulisse partisan..). Packed lunch in the Reserve. In the afternoon transfer to the famous Winery of Vinchio and Vaglio Serra, where students will be able to learn, step by step, techniques and secrets of the whole cycle of wine making process with the possibility to buy the bottles.

fenoglioBEPPE FENOGLIO

A tour dedicated to this great Piedmontese writer and his most important works, from the moments of rural life on the hills of Langa to the salient episodes of Partisan Resistance. This itinerary starts from Alba, the hometown of the writer, and touches the Room of Partisan Resistance, inside the Town Hall, which tells the period of Resistance on the hills around Alba by photos and objects; the old house and workshop of Fenoglio family, placed few steps from the Cathedral, and the “Govone High School”, the place of intellectual and moral formation for the young Fenoglio. Entrance to the Research Centre dedicated to the writer for a short visit. Free time for lunch; on request lunch at recommended restaurant. The tour goes on among the hills of High Langa area, touching the villages of Manera, San Bovo di Castino and Mango, discovering the places of “Jonny the partisan” and “The Malora”. The famous Pavaglione Farmhouse will be the destination of the walk, surrounded by a unique landscape, which is the symbol of Langhe Hills, both maternal and unkind, that the writer loved deeply. Possibility to complete the day with a stop-over at the village of Mango, for living again some events from “Jonny the
partisan”, “Partisan notes” and “A private question”. Visit to the Regional Wineshop of Moscato, housed in the medieval castle, which is well-preserved.

Few people really know the writer and tragedian Vittorio Alfieri, who was born in Asti in 1749 and well-known all around Europe thanks to his great works for theatre. Guided tour in the old town centre of Asti will touch places connected to the writer, as Alfieri Palace and the church of Saint Martino; during the tour students will discover his life and adventures, and the ideals of freedom and unity that made him the real precursor of Risorgimento in Asti and Piedmont. Entrance to the Museum of Risorgimento of Asti, placed in Ottoleghi palace, a beautiful Eighteenth-century building, where the visit includes also the underground air-raid shelter, built in 1943. Free time for lunch; on request lunch at recommended restaurant. Tour goes on with the village of San Martino Alfieri, which took the name from Alfieri Marquises that were the owner of feud in the past; this family gives birth to the writer and the famous architect Benedetto which projected for them the castle in the Eighteenth century; moreover they commissioned the parish, which is very rich in important works of art. Entrance to the Castle of Marquises, which nowadays houses a renowned winery, where students will be able to visit the historical cellars, the Italian style garden and discover the king of red wines in this area, which is the Barbera d’Asti d.o.c.g.

Itineraries can be modified according to teachers’ preferences and will be enriched with reading of pieces that students can choose before and read during the day; as an alternative, the tour guide will read the pieces selected from the main works of these writers, as those above mentioned.

HISTORIC AND CULTURAL TOURS

Cattedrale AstiDISCOVERING TERRITORY OF ASTI AND ITS THOUSAND YEAR HISTORY

Intended for primary, secondary and upper schools.
Description: it’s possible to choose between two kinds of itinerary.
-THE ROMAN CITY OF ASTI. A guided tour on the track of Hasta Pompeia, the Roman city of Asti which was able to achieve a place among the noble towns of Cisalpine Gaul. During the walk, students discover the famous Red Tower, the most important remain from Roman Period, the domus, a noble house, a small jewel of local archeological heritage, and the ancient square of foro. The itinerary goes on entering two important city museums: the Crypt of Saint Anastasio with the annexed Museum, where the Roman architecture is mixed with the Medieval style, in a really unique structure, and the Archeological Museum placed in the Complex of Saint Pietro in Consavia, where objects and ornaments narrate customs and traditions of ancient people and their transformation during the time.
-THE MEDIEVAL TOWN OF ASTI. A guided tour discovering the Medieval city of Asti, which lived between the Twelfth and the Fifteenth centuries its Golden Period. Walking among fortified houses and towers, symbol of power for the families that ruled it, students enter the Collegiate Church of Saint Secondo, dedicated to the Patron, and the majestic Cathedral of Saint Mary, two beautiful examples of Piedmontese Gothic style. Tour goes on with the Crypt of Saint Anastasio, a jewel of Romanesque architecture in Asti built between the Eleventh and the Twelfth centuries, and the Complex of Saint Pietro in Consavia, one of the most important medieval monuments in Piedmont, which was the seat of the famous Knights from Malta for many centuries.

s.secondo (cortazzone) BIGTHE ROMANESQUE CHURCHES, JEWELS AMONG MONFERRATO HILLS

Intended for primary, secondary and upper schools.
Description: tour crosses the beautiful Monferrato Hills, discovering the famous Romanesque churches, real masterpieces of Medieval architecture, built between the Eleventh and the Twelfth centuries on the most hidden and quietest hills. Students visit the church of Saints Nazario and Celso in Montechiaro d’Asti, with its particular two-color walls and impressive bell-tower, and the church of Saint Lorenzo in Montiglio, famous for sculpted capitals illustrating mysterious figures. Going on toward the north-western border of province, students reach Albugnano, where it’s possible to have packed lunch. Later they visit the beautiful Abbey of Vezzolano. According to the legend it was founded by Charlemagne who loved hunting in these woods; in the cloister it preserves a precious fresco decoration that dates back to the Thirteenth and Fourteenth centuries. Coming back to Asti, a last stop for visiting the church of Saint Secondo in Cortazzone, famous for sculpted decorations and suggestive panoramic position.

Description: cities of Piedmont have got fascinating history and beautiful monuments. In order to make discover them in an original, simple and funny way, the students, divided in teams, will have to find a treasure. With the help of some clues they solve amazing riddles using logic, cunning and ability!
Seat and operating methods: this work takes place in one of the most important Piedmontese cities (as Asti, Alessandria, Alba, Turin…) and can be made in one full day or half day, depending on the needs of participants.

TorinoTHE CITY OF TURIN AND THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF CINEMA

Intended for secondary and upper schools.
Description: tour starts from Piazza Castello, dominated by Madama Palace with its impressive Baroque façade projected by the great Filippo Juvarra, and the Royal Palace, the official residence of Savoia Kings until 1865; later entrance to the church of Saint Lorenzo, the first work in Turin by Guarino Guarini. In Piazza San Giovanni the Cathedral rises up, built in Renaissance style, which preserves the precious Holy Shroud. From here students can watch the roman Porta Palatina and remains of a theatre, together with a floor mosaic dated to the Twelfth century; between the church and the Royal Palace the beautiful Chapel of Holy Shroud stands out. Moving toward the main Via Roma, students reach Piazza San Carlo, the real Turin’s “living room”, with the “twin churches” and the historical coffee-bars. In few minutes it’s possible to arrive in Piazza Carignano, which hosts the famous Carignano Palace and Carignano Theatre. Here there is also the famous “Del Cambio” Restaurant, which was also frequented by Camillo Benso, the Count of Cavour. Packed lunch; on request lunch at recommended restaurant. Entrance to the National Museum of Cinema, placed in the Mole Antonelliana, one of the most visited Museum in the world; by a real travel across the world of moving image, the panoramic lift will lead visitors up the “Temple”, at 85 meters in height, for enjoying a beautiful scenic view over the city of Turin and Alps chain.

Description: guided tour discovering the old town centre of Turin. Packed lunch; on request lunch at recommended restaurant. Transfer to the Venaria Reale Realm, where Carlo Emanuele II of Savoy was able to concentrate “all that can be useful for leisure…” in a sumptuous architecture, which represents one the highest universal Baroque creation. Here the great architects in that period worked, from Castellamonte to Garove, from Juvarra to Alfieri; we can mention the Large Room of Diana, the Big Gallery, the Chapel of Saint Uberto and also the beautiful Gardens, that extend for 80 hectares with fountains, pools, rose gardens and orchards.

Description: guided tour discovering the Venaria Reale Realm, with the support of didactic forms that will help children to focus the main basics; during the visit the aspects of habitual life of nobility in that period, from the banquet to the court gathering, from the hunting to the art. Final quiet walk across the beautiful Gardens, among fountains, pools, gardens of roses and orchards.

Description: visit to the Synagogue of Casale Monferrato, one of the most luxurious in Europe, built in Piedmontese Rococo style in the first half of 18th century. Following the Jewish Art and History Museum, where many objects tell us habits and costumes of the Jewish people. The tour includes the Gallery of Silver, where fine ritual silver artifacts dated between the XVII and XIX centuries are recollected, and the Museum of Lights, which is an international collection of candleholders with eight arms made by famous contemporary artists with different materials and colors. Moving to the hamlet of Ottiglio and visit to a farm that produces, among the others, also the rare kosher wine, made respecting the rules of the Jewish religion. Description: the tour starts from the hill of Superga where the 4th of May 1949 the team of Grande Torino crashed on the massive wall embankment of the Basilica, dominating Turin and the slopes around, giving wonderful glimpses. Entrance to the Monumental Cemetery of Turin to stop at the gravestone of the Victims of Superga and the Monument to the Grande Torino. Stop at the Caffè Torino to step on against bad luck the golden bull placed in the entrance and the Bar Norman, historical bar of the city, where the 3th of December 1906 was born the Torino FC. During the tour, You will stop in Via Alfieri, to remember where there was the seat of the team at the time of Immortals. The tour goes on to the Stadium Filadelfia, used until the end of the season 1962-1963, to remember the success of this great team, with a short stop to the memorial stone for Gigi Meroni.
