A special tour among the suggestive landscape of Monferrato, on its hills among vineyards, woodland and historical hamlets. During the tour You take a break in two renowned local wine cellars in order to know the production area and the wine ageing. Wine tasting. The typical local red wines in this area are Barbera d’Asti docg and Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato docg, Freisa, Grignolino and Malvasia; among the white wines, there are Chardonnay, Pinot Nero and Cortese.

A special tour dedicated to the famous wines of Langhe hills, that represent the best wine tradition of Piedmont all over the world. The panorama on Langhe hills is characterized by vineyards and castles; you take a break in two wine cellars in order to know the production area and the wine ageing. In every wine cellar you can taste three local wines, as the red Barolo and Barbaresco wines, both of them produced from Nebbiolo variety. The grapes are cultivated in different hill areas and the wine is produced with different methods; in this way the result are high quality wines with different peculiar aromas. Among the white wines, there are Moscato d’Asti docg, Alta Langa docg and a well-known Brut produced with Pinot Nero and Chardonnay grapes.

Azienda Agricola Demarie Giovanni Wine Tour in Roero.

Roero hills lie on the left bank of Tanaro river, between Asti and Cuneo and they are well-known for the high quality wines and the badlands, generated by the erosion of the rocks. Today as in the past they characterize the landscape together with orchards and castles. You take a break in two wine cellars in order to know the production area and the wine ageing; at the end there is the wine tasting to discover the peculiarities and the right couplings with food. Among these important wines there is Roero Arneis docg, a dry white wine produced with Arneis grapes, and the Nebbiolo doc, a red wine produced with Nebbiolo grapes.

DISCOVERING THE WINE ROUTES…

ON THE WINE ROUTE OF MONFERRATO…

FIRST DAY. In the morning a tour discovering the Lands of Ruchè wine, which is one of the most representative wines in tradition of Monferrato and nowadays more and more appreciated internationally. A stop at Castagnole Monferrato, the birthplace of Ruchè, to visit an important winery and taste this so special wine. After transfer to Alfiano Natta to visit a famous Castle which is the seat of another prestigious winery. This building preserves an original set-up in the historical cellars, excavated in the raw tufa directly, where the ancient objects and tools are mixed with contemporary art installations. At the end, there is the taste of local wines, like Barbera d’Asti and Chardonnay ones. Transfer to Cocconato and lunch at a historical restaurant in the old town to eat the traditional dishes. In the afternoon visit to the beautiful Abbey of Saint Mary in Vezzolano, which is a masterpiece of the national architecture from Middle Ages. Tasting and making… Transfer to a local agritourism where the guests can test themselves into an amazing Cooking Class, to discover and prepare some of the most famous recipes from Piedmont tradition…The day finishes with a dinner to taste the dishes just prepared matched to the best local wines.

SPECIAL “WINE TOUR” STAY. For who will choose to stay on the Wine Route we suggest the itinerary below for the second day.

After breakfast, transfer in the direction of “Colline Alfieri” area; a stop at a cured pork meat factory in Ferrere to discover Salame Cotto from Monferrato (the “cooked salami”), which is one of the excellences of local gastronomy, made using very high quality ingredients and artisan methods exclusively. After this, a stop at Cisterna d’Asti to visit a famous winery and know some typical wines from this land, first Cisterna doc one produced using the rare Croatina grapes. Tasting. Lunch at restaurant with a traditional menu and departure.

 

ON THE “ASTESANA” WINE ROUTE

FIRST DAY. In early morning arrival of visitors among the Southern hills in the Province of Asti; here the so-called “Strada del Vino Astesana” (the “Astesana Wine Route”) goes through vineyards, farms, towers and castles. It is dedicated to the most representative wines of this territory, like “Barbera d’Asti” and “Brachetto d’Acqui” red wines; among the white wines, “Asti Spumante” and “Moscato d’Asti” stand out. The starting point of this tour is the city of Canelli, the capital of Spumante production and the mouthpiece for the recognition of Langhe, Monferrato and Roero hills as UNESCO Heritage. In fact, this city id the seat of the precious historical wine cellars called the “Underground Cathedrals”, nowadays renowned all over the world. Introduction to the territory of Astesana and its wines of excellence at “Enoteca Regionale di Canelli e dell’Astesana(the Regional Wineshop of Canelli and Astesana), which is also the seat of the homonymous association of producers and towns established in 1997. The aim of partners is valorizing and promoting the image of this land and the high quality wines from Piedmont, paying specific attention to the wines produced in the Province of Asti. To follow, a tour of one of the suggestive “Underground Cathedrals”, the ancient cellars excavated in the raw tufa directly more than 200 of years ago, going down in the deepness for more levels under the paving of the city. Here many thousands of bottles of Asti Spumante refine. Wine tasting. The next stop is the near Contini Tower, located in Santa Libera locality, in a breathtaking panoramic position. It was built during the Middle Ages for the protection of this land and was one of the backdrops for the battle between Partisans and Nazi soldiers during the Second World War. Traditional lunch at restaurant. In the afternoon transfer to Nizza Monferrato, the Capital of Barbera d’Asti docg wine and short tour of the city. The walk includes among the other sites the church of Saint Giovanni in Lanero, the church of Saint Siro, dated to the Fourteenth century, the Town Hall with the City Tower and the Medieval arcades and the small shops in Via Maestra. You cannot miss the curious “Museum of Taste” in Palazzo Crova, a noble residence from the Eighteenth century, which shows the local products and the most important recipes from Piedmont cooking. The last stop at the “Museo delle Contadinerie Bersano” (“Bersano Agricultural Custom Museum”) created by Bersano family, a famous family of wine producers working in Nizza Monferrato. The museum recollects many agricultural and domestic objects and tools very spread in the past rural society; some of these tools date back to the Sixteenth century! The itinerary finishes in the producing area of the company, with entrance to the cellars and wine tasting at the end. Accommodation at the hotel/farm holiday, dinner and overnight.

SECOND DAY. After breakfast, transfer to Castelnuovo Calcea and visit to “La Court Artistic Park”, founded in the heart of Aluffi Estate by the famous wine producer Michele Chiarlo. The path was created in the sign of artistic freedom and improvisation, mixing the natural set designs with several forms and materials objects, between reality and fantasy in a fabulous atmosphere. During the walk in the Park you can meet kings and queens, dragons and minstrels, curious felines and magic trees, while the artistic works reference the four Elements of Nature, among sirens and birds. Among the artists involved in this project, there are the famous Emanuele Luzzati, Fabio Cavanna and Peppino Campanella. Later you transfer to Costigliole d’Asti for a special visit to ICIF (Italian Culinary Institute For Foreigners), the renowned International Cooking School housed in the Castle. The ICIF Association was born in 1991 in order to protect and valorize the image of Italian cooking and products in collaboration with the professionals working in the field of restaurant industry overseas. It organizes very high quality masters and stages for groups of Italian and foreign young experts, as chefs, sommelier and restaurant owners that would like to acquire an “Italian specialization”. This Institute is provided with the most sophisticated instruments for a modern didactic work and includes a Winehouse, an Oil House and a very innovative Tasting Room, together with some other interesting gastronomic thematic areas. After the tasting… the making..! Visitors can test themselves into an amusing Cooking Lesson, to discover and prepare some of the most famous dishes from Piedmont tradition. At the end, a lunch tasting the courses just prepared matched to the best local wines. The day finishes at Santo Stefano Belbo, with a tour dedicated to the famous writer Cesare Pavese. The itinerary touches the most important places for the writer, who was born here and here he wanted to set his last novel called “The Moon and Bonfires”, published in 1950. This itinerary starts from the Foundation dedicated to Cesare Pavese, the focal point for researchers and people keen about his works; there a small museum shows books and objects belonged to the writer. A second stop at Cesare Pavese’s Birth House, which preserves photos, books, manuscripts, and the room where the writer was born. Last stop at the House-Workshop of Nuto, the fraternal friend of Pavese and important figure in his last work, who was an able carpenter and clarinet player. Departure.
