ASTI IN TOUR!

The guided tour starts from Piazza Vittorio Alfieri, which is dedicated to the famous writer who was born in this town in 1749. Moving toward the small Piazza San Secondo, you reach the Collegiate Church of Saint Secondo, built between the Thirteenth and the Fourteenth centuries in the typical Piedmontese gothic style, that preserves inside precious artistic works. Next to it, there is the Town Hall, projected during the Eighteenth Century by the famous Piedmontese architect Benedetto Alfieri. Walking among medieval towers, you cross the ancient Jewish ghetto, where the Synagogue built in the Nineteenth century reminds the presence of a Community that was active and integrated in the life of city for many centuries. From Piazza Roma you go on along the central street of the city, Corso Vittorio Alfieri, whith its beautiful Baroque buildings: Mazzetti Palace, Ottolenghi Palace and Alfieri family’s one, where the writer was born. You enter the impressive Cathedral of Saint Mary, one of the biggest in Piedmont, where the rigor of medieval architecture is mixed with the pomp of Baroque fresco decoration. A stop in Piazza Cairoli in order to watch the Red Tower, built by Romans in the first century b.C. The walk finishes under Troyana Tower, which is 44 meters high; it is the highest tower in town.

A suggestive itinerary dedicated to “UNDERGROUND TOWN OF ASTI”, which will lead you to discover the most hidden beauties in the city. Starting from the Crypt in the Church of Saint Secondo, where the Patron’s relics are preserved, the tour will carry on with the Crypt of Saint Anastasio and annexed Museum, where the glory of Asti during Middle Ages lives again, from Lombard Period to the important Monastic Orders. You will reach later the air-raid shelter in Ottolenghi Palace, a refined palace built in the Eighteenth century. Tour will end at the Fossils Museum, a rich showcase of fossils dated to Pliocene period (from 5 to 2 million of years ago). On request (only for groups) possibility to substitute the Fossils Museum wiht the suggestive cellars of Gazelli Palace, an antique noble building located in the centre of the city.

Nizza Monferrato - Palio di Asti 5A JUMP BACK IN TIME ..IN THE HEART OF  “PALIO” RACE OF ASTI

A guided tour, with a guide dressed in old clothes, through streets and towers of Asti, to discover places and people that shaped history of this medieval city. Starting from the ancient Piazzetta delle Erbe and tower of Guttuari, you will continue with the Town Hall and Collegiate Church of San Secondo, dedicated to the Saint Patron of the city, in honor of which Palio race takes places over a thousand years. Here, on the third Sunday of September, the Palio Race day, you can attend the blessing of jockey and horse that will represent the district of Saint Secondo during the race; this ritual will take place simultaneously in all the other districts of city and villages taking part into the race. Later, we will move to Piazza Medici and Piazza Roma, to admire the highest towers in the city, that are Troyana and Comentina towers. Finally, we reach the imposing Gothic Cathedral, built in the oldest area of the city, where once stood the Roman Forum of “Hasta Pompeia”. A few steps from the Cathedral, there is the so-called Torre Rossa, where Saint Secondo was prisoned before being martyred, and remains of the Ancient Walls dated to the Fifteenth century.

You make a guided visit to the “working museum” which fascinates thanks to the craftsmanship of production and the original location, placed in a Liberty Style house built in the Nineteenth century. At the end, nougat and chocolate taste. Later guided tour to the old town of Asti. A guided tour in the old town centre of Asti, in order to discover its medieval heart made up of impressive towers, symbols of ancient noble class, suggestive churches, as the Cathedral, a beautiful example of Piedmontese Gothic style, and the Collegiate Church of Saint Secondo, that preserves in the crypt the holy bones of Patron. You will see also refined Baroque palaces, the old Jewish Ghetto and elegant squares built in the Ninehteenth century. They are still hidden among Monferrato hills; built between the Tenth and the Twelfth centuries in order to hold people and pilgrims, they enchant thanks to richness of symbolic decorations. You’ll visit the church of Saint Secondo, next to the village of Cortazzone, and the church of Saints Nazario and Celso in Montechiaro d’Asti, which is one of a kind because of impressive bell-tower. You can’t exclude the beautiful Abbey of Saint Mary of Vezzolano, a powerful centre of politic, cultural and economic points of view until the Sixteenth century, that hosted Kings and Princes. Legend tells it was founded by Charlemagne who loved hunting in these woods; the Abbey preserves an original pulpit and a precious fresco decoration in the cloister, dated to the Thirteenth and Fourteenth centuries.

The town of Cisterna d’ Asti is placed in the heart of Alfieri Hills, a strategic wine growing area placed among Monferrato, Langhe and Roero Hills. The castle, which dates back to the Twelfth century, dominates all the hills around, and preserves the  “Museum of Noble Arts and Crafts of the past”, which shows workshops and rural traditions in use during the Nineteenth century, as the nougat laboratory, the printing house, the tailor shop and so on. Later visit to a famous winery to taste a typical wine of this territory, called “Cisterna doc”, produced by the rare Croatina grapes, an old variety rediscovered in this zone.

Few people know suggestive adventures of Aleramo the Knight, the first Marquis of Monferrato, one of the most influent and long-lived European dynasties. His love and military adventures will live again during a tour starting from the ancient village of Moncalvo: strategic centre of this Kingdom in the past, nowadays it is the famous Capital of White Truffle from Monferrato Hills. Moncalvo still preserves medieval streets and palaces, and beautiful churches, where you’ll find paintings by Guglielmo Caccia, an important Piedmontese artist who lived during the Seventeenth century.  Tour will go on towards the village of Grazzano Badoglio, the town founded in the Tenth century by Aleramo, that is buried inside the Abbey of Saint Vittore, later turned into the Parish church.  Lunch time.  In the afternoon stop at the village of Montemagno,  one of the few village in Monferrato to preserve the urban plan form the Middle Ages, with 13 historical alleys dominate by the medieval castle.  You cannot miss the Neoclassical parish with the monumental staircase in stone, which is really sugggestive. At the end visit to a winery to taste the wines of this lands,  as Barbera d’ Asti, Ruchè,  Gringolino and Malvasia.

DAVIDE LAJOLO A 70 ANNIDAVIDE LAIOLO THE WRITER: LIFE, WORKS AND HIS “GREEN SEA”

This tour takes place among charming landscapes of High Monferrato Hills, in the small village of Vinchio. On these quiet hills the writer and politician Davide Laiolo was born and spent the most important moments of his adventurous life. He became famous especially because of its experience as partisan, with the name of Ulisse. The guided tour dedicated to him starts from the multimedia museum “Vinchio è il mio nido” (“Vinchio is my nest”) like so he called its native country. In the museum photos and words taken from his books tell his life as partisan and writer and his activity in political and journalistic fields. You go on with some short stops in the village and in the Valsarmassa Natural Reserve (“the castle”, “the Oak”…) and later visit to a famous local winery to taste the best wines of this territory.

Uncontaminated Nature gives voice to a foothills territory, characterized by rock and steeper slopes, where vineyards and fields leave space to wood and extended grasslands. Perfect for who loves trekking, paths crossing these hills follow the ancient “Streets of Salt”, used in the past by expert wayfarers for transporting salt, oil and anchovies from the coasts of Liguria to the Piedmontese interland. Tour starts from Mombaldone, considered one of the most beautiful historical towns in Italy. During the walk an explanation will be given about the spectacular “calanchi”, the majestic rock faces modelled by rain and wind, and about the medieval village, with stone houses and ancient walls perfectly preserved.  Later enter an important dairy, where the famous Robiola from Roccaverano dop is produced, a tasty goat milk cheese produced only in this small area. Tour goes on reaching the village of Roccaverano, the small capital of this part of Langa, with its defensive tower and the precious parish built in Renaissance style. Lunch time. In the afternoon a panoramic walk through Nature, surrounded by suggestive landscapes, for reaching a farm where rear donkeys and goats are bred and  the famous Robiola cheese is produced. The hills of Cesare Pavese are the land of great landscapes, precious truffles and famous wines: among them, “Asti Spumante” wine, the valued White Sparkling Wine of this region, is the most important one. A tour discovering the places of Cesare Pavese, trough the town of Santo Stefano Belbo, where the writer was born and wanted to place his last work, called “The Moon and Bonfires”, published in 1950. The itinerary includes the Foundation dedicated to  Cesare Pavese, the focal point for researchers and people keen about his works, where a small Museum shows books and objects of the writer; Cesare Pavese’s Birth House which preserves photos, books, manuscripts, and the room where the writer was born; the House-Workshop of Nuto, the fraternal friend of Pavese and important figure in his last romance, who was an able carpenter and clarinet player.

You can’t say you have been in Langa without visiting its Capital, Alba. Its enchanting old town is dominated by impressive medieval towers and buildings in alternation with arcades of the elegant manor houses. They remind the noble families that guaranteed glory and richness to the city between the Thirteenth and the Fifteenth centuries. Going on the Roman streets of the ancient “Alba Pompeia”, you discover big Gothic and Baroque churches, surrounded by flavors of chocolate and truffles, among luxury shop windows of boutiques and jewelers.

“Three noses is what you need for drinking Barolo wine..” (Cesare Pavese, from “ The Companion”, 1947). A panoramic tour of the beautiful Langhe Hills of Barolo wine will lead you to the Castle of Grinzane Cavour, with its impressive medieval structure still preserved perfectly, where the famous statesman Camillo Benso, the Count of Cavour, spent 17 years of his life. Some of rooms host an interesting museum dedicated to tradition of Langa and trades in the past. In the Regional Wine Shop placed in the ancient cellars of castle you can taste and buy the precious wines and some other typical products of this territory, as truffle-based creams and hazelnuts cakes and biscuits. Later you will enter a renowned winery  to observe closely all the secrets about production of Barolo wine; at the end wine tasting. Lunch time. In the afternoon you will move towards the village of Barolo, the Capital of this important hill zone, for a walk through the inner and a visit to the famous Castle; it was for 600 years long the seat of powerful Falletti Marquises and nowadays it hosts the WI MU, “Wine Museum”. A suggestive multimedia and multi-sensorial tour discovering the culture of wine and all its dimensions, from historical one to legendary one, from economical  to anthropological features, without overlooking artistic and playful aspects. Stop-over at the Regional Wine Shop of Barolo, located in the suggestive cellar of castle, which shows 180 different tags of this precious wine. The day will finish with a walk across the village of La Morra, placed not so far from Barolo’s one, rich in history and panoramic views, with the beauty Baroque parish and the civic tower; from an observation platform you will have a 360° panoramic view, which reaches the Alps Mountains and the nearest Ligurian localities.

“Wine is one of the greatest signs of civilization in the world” Ernest Hemingway wrote… Another precious red wine contends for the glory with the famous Barolo wine: the Barbaresco wine. Thanks to pleasant  scent that reminds violet and intense and velvety  flavor  it will conquest your senses and your heart… Come and discover it among Langhe Hills placed around Alba… Barbaresco, the wine; Barbaresco, the village: an indivisible union, same as the lines running after each other on these hills. A quiet walk across the town will lead you to its famous Tower, which is 36 meters high, and the Baroque parish  dedicated to Saint Giovanni Battista.  Inside the deconsecrated church of Saint Donato there is the Regional Wine Shop of Barbaresco, where you can stop for a taste choosing  among more than one hundred bottles of this precious wine. Transfer to the village of Neive, considered as one of the most beautiful historical towns in Italy: the tour will include the Chapels of Saint Rocco and Saint Sebastiano, the Baroque Confraternity of Saint Michele and many medieval palaces. Finally, entrance to a historical wine cellar in order to know secrets of this precious wine and final tasting. fenoglioALBA AND BEPPE FENOGLIO THE WRITER: PARTISANS AND HILLS STORIES

Alba, the city of towers, wines and truffles shows its literary heart thanks to the stories by Beppe Fenoglio, between memories of country life and the incredible adventures of Johnny the Partisan. The tour will touch the Room of Partisan Resistance, inside the Town Hall, which preserves among the other objects the golden purple heart given to the city because it was relieved by the Nazi-Fascist occupation thanks to the partisans in 1944; the old house and workshop of Fenoglio family, which nowadays is the seat of Research Centre dedicated to the writer; the “Govone High School”, with the church of Saint Domenico, a medieval architecture masterpiece. During the guided tour, shorts readings from the books of Fenoglio will be read.

Santo Stefano BelboTHE HILLS OF HIGH LANGA HILLS…AMONG HISTORICAL TOWNS AND UNIQUE LANDSCAPES

The guided tour starts from Santo Stefano Belbo, the birth place of the writer Cesare Pavese and “Moscato d’Asti” wine, for going on with the village of Cortemilia; during the route, you will touch the villages of Rocchetta Belbo and Cossano Belbo, where the famous “tajarin”, the traditional fresh hand-made pasta, were born. Touching Campetto, you will arrive in Castino, with its big castle, and later in Cortemilia, the heart of Bormida Valley and Capital of hazelnut. The two villages of Saint Michele and Saint Pantaleo are made up of narrow colonnaded streets, palaces in stone, medieval churches rich in works of art and the circular tower, the impressive protection of the village. You could enter an old farm, where the valued “Round Kind Hazelnut”, is cultivated and transformed into the traditional sweet products. Lunch time. You cannot miss later the Romanesque church of Saint Mary; all the hill around is characterized by the terrains built with dry stone walls, a real masterpiece of the rural engineering of the past, that made possible the development of agriculture in this inaccessible territory. The tour starts again toward Perletto and later Levice, where you could admire the parish church. The last place will be Bergolo and finally Prunetto, where an impressive castle is still visible; inside it houses the curious “Museum of Mule”, the most important animal used in the past this territory.

ALESSANDRIATHE CITY OF ALESSANDRIA

A guided tour discovering the city of Alessandria, which was founded in the Twelfth century in the land between two important rivers, Tanaro and Orba, and not far away from Liguria mountains; it is placed in a strategic trade area between the plain and the sea and takes the name from the Pope Alexander II. Its historical town preserves many ancient buildings, as Ghilini Palace, Borsalino Palace and the Town Hall, and beautiful churches, as the church of Santa Maria del Castello, which is the oldest one, built in the typical Lombard Gothic style. Half day guided tour. Casale, with its glorious history, was in the past the undisputed Capital of Monferrato area; nowadays it is still a very important cultural and economic centre in Piedmont. The guided walk starts from Piazza Castello, from the impressive fortress which was residence of Marquises of Monferrato before and Gonzaga family later; the Civic Tower, Piazza Mazzini, the church of Saint Stefano and the famous Cathedral of Saint Evasio will be the next stages; you will admire also many Baroque palaces as the Town Hall.

A guided tour through the historical town of Acqui Terme, which is famous since the Roman Period thanks to its abundant hot springs characterized by numerous therapeutic and depurative properties. The city has very ancient origin and preserves important architectonical works built during the Roman and Medieval periods which peep out from the elegant streets and the old pastry shops. You’ll visit the beautiful Cathedral, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, built in Romanesque style, which preserves precious works of art, as the triptych representing the Virgin Mary of Monserrat by the famous Flemish painter Bermejo in the Fifteenth century. Later you will cross the old district of Pisterna, where  Baroque palaces and houses built in the Renaissance period follow one another among the suggestive alleys and restaurants, art galleries and wine shops. In Piazza della Bollente you’ll discover a precious thermal spring, which gushes fixed temperature of 75° centigrade. The tour will finish at the Regional Wine Shop called “Acqui Terme e Vino”, which shows the best Piedmontese wines, with a particular attention to the local ones, as “Dolcetto d’Acqui” and “Brachetto d’Acqui”. Free time for looking around the small shops of typical products, as the “farinata”, cheese of “bec”, White Truffle, the “filetto baciato” salame and delicious sweets, from chocolates filled up with Rhum to amaretti cookies.

TorinoDREAMING OF TURIN… DICOVERING ITS BAROQUE HEART

This tour discovering the old town of Turin starts from Piazza Castello, the heart of the city, dominated by Palazzo Madama. You admire its Baroque façade  projected by Filippo Juvarra in the Eighteenth century. Later entrance to the church of Saint Lorenzo, the first work by Guarino Guarini in Turin together with the Holy Shroud Chapel placed between Palazzo Reale and the Cathedral. A stop in Piazzetta Reale, where Palazzo Reale rises up, the official residence of Savoy dynasty until 1865. You go on with the Cathedral of Saint Giovanni, the unique exemplar of religious building from Reinassance in the city. the Roman theatre and the famous Porta Palatina. After, you walk again toward Piazza Castello and reach the colonnades of Via Roma, among luxurious shops. The tour ends in Piazza San Carlo, the living room of the town, with the famous “twin churches” dedicated to Saint Carlo and Saint Cristina. It is possible to continue the tour including the suggestive Piazza Carignano, with the Theatre and Palazzo Carignano; crossing its courtyard you arrive in Piazza Carlo Alberto. The “Golden Pentagon” of Turin: a travel discovering the Realms of Savoia family…between history and pleasures. “Some hills surround the territory of Turin towards East, where its inhabitants usually go in order to make up for the vitality after the strains supported in the city, staying in country houses that nature and art made pleasant. There are luxurious mansions rich in pleasures with fountains, fields, gardens, small woods and vineyards…(Theatrum Sabaudiae, 1682). The elegance of structures and amusement that lived inside are the features of the residences of Savoia Kings built in the country side around Turin between the Seventeenth and the Eighteenth centuries, included in Unesco Heritage since 1997. The famous “Crown of Pleasures” is made up by ten mansions and castles placed in the heart of the ancient SavoiaKingdom, together with the city palaces, the seats of political power, as the Royal Palace and Madama Palace.

The tour starts from Venaria Reale Realm, which represents one the highest universal Baroque creation, where the great architects in that period worked, as Castellamonte, Garove, Juvarra and Alfieri; we can mention the Large Room of Diana, the Big Gallery, the Chapel of Saint Uberto and also the beautiful Gardens, that extend for 80 hectares with fountains, pools, rose gardens and orchards. As an alternative visit to the Hunting Palace of Stupinigi. You will be astonished by refinement and luminosity of the big elliptical room, where the rich decorations exalts the theme of hunting and the mythic figure of Diana. Lunch time. In the afternoon the itinerary goes on with the beautiful church of Superga, which dominates from the top of the hill the city of Turin and the other hills around, with very suggestive panoramic views. The church, projected by Juvarra in the Eighteenth century. hosts the Royal Tombs of Savoia, real sculptural, pictorial and decorative masterpieces. You cannot miss a visit inside the impressive dome where by a spiral staircase you will reach the balcony outside: during the sunny days you could admire Alps, and in the particular  Monviso, Rocciamelone, Gran Paradiso and Monte Rosa mountains. As an alternative or in addiction for the afternoon, visit to the Villa of the Queen, commissioned in 1615 by the Prince Cardinal Maurizio of Savoy family on the model of the roman villas. The palace and the gardens were enlarged and refined by the wife Ludovica, involving the best artists working in that time in the North of Italy. Even now the Villa surprises visitors with its decorations and furniture inside, and caverns and tricks of the water in the park.
